1 was. Definitely didn't live up to my expectations or build on how awesome Vol.
Having said that, the plot here veers off completely to encompass a Danger room suddenly transforming itself into Artifical Intelligence with enhanced sentient thoughts, courtesy of Shiar Technology. Prof Xavier appears in this issue to combat the Danger room but then drops out of the scene.
If not for the drawings, I would have rated this a one star. There is the pointless cameo appearance of the Fantastic Four which is just padding.
When compared to the first volume, this second volume of Astonishing X-Men is way,way off the mark. There is some hint of Emma Frost's duplicity, hinted at in Vol 1 but now further developed here to involve the Hellfire Club, another X-Men thing requiring some explanation which was not offered here. But the whole plot of this comic seems to hinge on the Danger room killing off one student and endangering the others.
I am not quite sure what the other 5 star reviewers see in this comic. As a stand-alone comic, it is completely confusing and is dependent on Vol 1 for continuity.
This was given as a throwaway remark and one has to be aware of past X-men stories for this to make some sense.
Hope Whedon returns to this series someday and resolves all unresolved topic he left. But once I did some Wikipedia digging and rereading the arc it became much better. The ending of the saga really shines. Excellent package. The only problem for me was that I'm not familiar with X-Men canon enough to know what the Hellfire club and Cassandra Nova are - thus first ark in this volume ("Torn") was pretty hard to grasp.
It's a truly astonishing conclusion to a fantastic run. Collecting the second half of Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men, this book is the best the X-Men have been in YEARS.
The title of the series is the most appropriate for itself. We genuinely fear for these poor X-men. He touches on deep and interesting subjects, such as Colossus's and Kitty's love.
I feel like I'm watching a grade A science fiction movie, and not a chopped up plotless action movie. I won't say much more than that, because your in for a total suprise. Joss induces a sense of fear within his readers.
Joss Whedon continues to impress me throughout this series. It is really hard to find dialogue as valuable as these through the history of comic writing. This may be the most dangerous task yet for our X-men.
Not only is that fun to read, but the Emma Frost revelation made my heart skip a beat. These X-men stories are Astonishing. The humor, action, and suspense hold this thing together strong.
